NEC 300.5 — Underground Wiring Burial Depths
Minimum cover requirements for underground cable and raceway installations, drawn from NEC 2023 Table 300.5(A). “Cover” means the distance from the top of the cable or raceway to finished grade — not the trench depth.
Minimum Cover by Wiring Method (General Locations)
Selected values for the scenarios electricians hit most. Table 300.5(A) has additional columns and conditions — verify your exact situation in the codebook.
| Wiring Method / Circuit | Min. Cover | Field Note |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-buried cable (UF) or conductors | 24 in. | The default for cable without a raceway |
| Rigid metal conduit (RMC) or IMC | 6 in. | Shallowest option — metal raceway protects the conductors |
| Nonmetallic raceway listed for direct burial (PVC) | 18 in. | Without concrete encasement |
| Residential branch circuit, 120V, 20A or less, GFCI-protected | 12 in. | The shallow-trench allowance for typical shed / post-light circuits |
| Low-voltage landscape lighting (30V or less) in UF or listed cable | 6 in. | Irrigation and lighting circuits |
Location-Specific Rules
The general depths above change under traffic areas, buildings, and concrete.
| Location | Rule |
|---|---|
| Under streets, roads, alleys, and public parking lots | 24 in. for all wiring methods — no shallow allowances |
| Under one- and two-family dwelling driveways and parking areas | 18 in. permitted for the dwelling's own circuits |
| Under a building | Cable must be in a raceway; the raceway itself needs no cover below the building |
| Under at least 4 in. of concrete (sidewalk, pad) | Reduced depths permitted — check the table row for your wiring method |
Field Notes & Related Requirements
- • Measure cover from the top of the cable or raceway to finished grade — a 24 in. cover requirement means the trench is deeper than 24 in.
- • Backfill must not damage the wiring — no sharp rock or corrosive material against cable (Section 300.5(F)).
- • Direct-buried splices must use methods listed for direct burial (Section 300.5(E)).
- • Where cable emerges from grade, protect it with a raceway from the required depth up to at least 8 ft above grade (Section 300.5(D)).
- • Underground service conductors that are not encased in concrete need a warning ribbon in the trench at least 12 in. above them (Section 300.5(D)(3)).
- • Local amendments and utility rules can require greater depths — always confirm with your AHJ.
